WORK PACKAGES

The framework that includes all those procedures required on the one hand for the 3D modeling of the surface of an archaeological site on the other hand for its study and qualitative documentation was developed. Extensive bibliographic review was held and citation of internationally recognized practices and methods in combination with modern technological standards and tools. The review led to the submission of a scientific paper that will be presented at an international conference as well as the development of the Cultural-touristic resources documentation framework that will feed the rest of the Work Packages.

A prototype system that is expected to serve as a powerful tool for the authority charged with the management and promotion of a touristic-cultural resource was developed. The system is able to create custom virtual geospatial worlds that can be overlaid with the real world. The above are supported by Geographic Information Systems functionalities for superimposing multiple layers and for the spatial reference of the represented objects. The final models can be exported from the system and offered through data services or special repositories. The final deliverable during its design and implementation was published in a recognized scientific journal (Q1 ranking) in the Scimago database.

Software of the cultural - touristic resources managing authority

The simultaneous representation of virtual with real and their superimposition on a hybrid interface define the concept of Mixed Reality. The objectives of this Work Package was the deployment of a prototype hybrid interface that will be able to display the 3D scenes of the models deployed by the system of the previous Work Package and offered either by the promoting authorities or by relevant repositories. As a result, it will be able to enhance the experience either of the visitor of the tourist-cultural resource or of the remotely connected user.

WP4 studies the need to explore communication infrastructure requirements in order to meet the needs of serving the virtual models related to a touristic-cultural resource. Also, as the positioning system (GPS) of the visitor's device is not as accurate as the spatial reference of the available virtual models, resulting in a significant misalignment between the virtual and the real world, specialized spatial adaptation infrastructures are required. For the aforementioned as well as for related issues, the technologies that can satisfy them were investigated and the framework of the required infrastructures that the promoting authority of the touristcultural resources should have was approached.

The purpose of WP5 was to carry out the standard documentation, piloting and demonstration procedures of a system. This was achieved by using self-means and equipment of the participating partners. The field of application was at the 16th century building block located in the archeological site of Apollonia of the Municipality of Volvi, selected by EFAPETH as the Monument for the Demonstration and Pilot Application of MERGIN ’MODE.
